Color Swatches - Reference Gallery

This page is a record of color swatches. Oil Paints can be expensive, and ideally you want to have as much idea of how different pigments will react to each other.

My instructor, with examples from her career, suggested that we test colors and make color swatches to work with as reference points.

It's made painting a lot easier with less guess-work.

Below will be my swatches thus far, and a legend to understand my color-codes.

The initial set of 11 colors were chosen by my initial instructor, Laura Rath. She's a painter of over a decade's experience, and asked us to bring these as starting options for the class.

Any of these swatches have a number visible on their upper-left corner in each image, as well as the color names. Colors with a single name and number are as such. Eveything else is a 1:1 mixture of each combination!

In the latter combinations using greater amounts per ratio, or more colors than two at once, these codes are used to abbreviate each entry.

  7. Naples Yellow Hue - NYH
  8. Burnt Umber - BU
  9. Burnt Sienna - BS
  10. Permanant Alizarin Crimson - PAC
  11. Titanium White - TW

As you can see, there're a lot of colors to be combined, and can make some very visually-flavorful combinations. Some of my favorites include 2_4, 3_7, and 5_11.

Below, you can see some more complex mixes that I workshopped on printer-paper to be able to use in continuing pieces.

Per the file of each single swatch, the format covers the number codes of each used color as well as the respective numerical ratio.

In addition, some swatches have Linwood in the filename. Linwood seed oil adds to the base of each paint- thinning them and allowing for variances in color and texture.

It's called PYellow because it's being used as the base of a portrait for a character whose name starts with P.
